This stunning 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe Hardtop was originally a California car produced in the Oakland, CA plant. A gentleman from Missouri purchased it from California in 1991 and drove and enjoyed the car for 12 years before he decided it was time to treat this iconic apiece of American Classic Car history to a very high end, professional, frame-off restoration. In fact he was a bit of a Tr-Five Chevy enthusiast and had been restoring several ’57 Bel Airs over the years. He did not buy them to flip and resell them. He bought them to enjoy and part of that enjoyment for him was in the restoration process. He did his best to keep the car as original as possible and used original parts when possible. He mentioned that this Bel Air was extremely solid and rust free when he got it and did not need any body panel replacement or rust repair. Of course he went with the original Onyx Black/ India Ivory color scheme on the body and redid the interior in the original black and silver as well. He was quite certain this car still had its original FC coded 283 V8 4bbl motor which he had completely rebuilt as well as the original Power Glide Automatic transmission which was also rebuilt. He reset the odometer to zero at the time of restoration and there as just under 3050 miles on the car since the restoration was completed 12 years ago. Having owned this one for 24 years he was getting up in age and decided it was time for someone else to get the chance to enjoy this amazing classic….maybe you!!!!? As you will see the paint and body are beautiful, the interior is stunning, the engine bay looks extremely original, and the undercarriage is highly detailed and rust free. This is a true investment quality ’57 Bel Air that can be driven and enjoyed as well as taken to the local shows and cruise-ins. I have owned several nicely modified Tri-Five Chevy’s over the years and they are awesome. But, there is definitely something to be said for a ’57 Sport Coupe Bel Air that is as original as this one!!! While it is a very high quality car, it is not a trailer queen and is not priced like one either. I will do my best to provide enough large images, a video so you can hear it start up and running and an honest description to help you decide if this is the ’57 Bel Air you have been searching for. As with all of my classics, I do have this car advertised on my website and several others. Therefore, if you decide this is the one for you, feel free to call me to discuss how we can put this Black Beauty in your garage before the next car guy or gal beats you to it. I am also a Transport Broker and will be happy to get you a quote to have this car transported in an enclosed carrier right to your door. Overseas sales are welcome and I can assist in getting the car to the port of your choice. Sit back and enjoy!!
As I mentioned this was a rust free California car up until 24 years ago when it was purchased by the Chevy enthusiast in Missouri. The Car was only driven on sunny days and stored in a climate controlled garage under a cover the rest of the time. After his first 12 years of ownership he decided he liked this one so much he would treat it to a high end, frame-off restoration. The body was extremely straight and rust free to start out so it was a great candidate and he knew that. He enjoyed keeping his cars as original as possible and since this car was originally a Black onyx with india Ivory roof car that is what he stayed with. When I received the car, it looked great, however there were small scratches, chips, and other minor blems that had accumulated over the 12 years he drove and enjoyed this Bel Air after he completed the restoration. I decided the car was so nice that it was time to refresh the paint and get rid of the minor blems. I think you will see in the pics that follow that the Paint on this Bel Air probably looks better then when it was new in 1957. Body panels are extremely straight which is hard to do on a big bodied black steel body like this one. Body panels all look original and the gaps are excellent. Doors open and close nicely. He had used most of the original stainless and had it hand polished out. It still looks fantastic with only a minor ding or two. The bumpers look awesome. Emblems and other trim items all look fantastic and were wither polished out or replaced with NOS parts. All of the glass looks excellent and windows roll up and down nicely. You have to love the Sport Coupe styling without the post when the windows are rolled down! I will not go so far as to say this car is flawless as the pickiest of buyers will probably find a minor chip or flaw that I may have missed but this is definitely a high quality #2 car that you will be proud to own and drive! I think the pictures will tell you what you want to know…enjoy the photo tour below:
Complimenting the gorgeous Onyx Black exterior is a factory stock Black and Silver interior exactly as it was originally ordered as you will see in the trim tag pictured later. Of course the previous owner had the interior restored just as nicely as the exterior 12 years ago. It looks like it was done last week! Door panels, seat covers, interior panels, headliner, carpeting, dash, all look fantastic. Original steering wheel looks awesome and the entire dash is basically all stock and original just the way he liked it. All of the gauges and lights appear to be working correctly. The original radio is in place with an FM converter mounted under the dash but I could not get that to work. Nice set of Chevrolet Floor mats finishes out the interior. Seats are extremely comfortable and that front bench seat is ready for date night! Of course no ’57 Bel Air would be complete without the fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror. Take a look inside:
This beautiful ’57 Bel Air Sport Coupe has the upgraded 283 V8 4bbl under the hood pushing out 220hp. The codes on the motor stamping indicate it is an FC code which corresponds with the 4bbl 283 V8 mated to a Power Glide Automatic transmission exactly as this car is equipped. The previous owner was quite certain this was the original motor for the car. I took a pic of the stamping on the front passenger pad but it is hard to see in the pic below. Regardless, the motor was professionally rebuilt 12 years ago and the odometer was reset to zero. There has been just over 3000 miles put on this car since the rebuild and it fires right up and drives beautifully. Make sure you watch the video that follows to hear it start up and running. I am not a Tri-Five expert so I may not be able to answer all of your technical questions if you have any but from everything I can see this engine is extremely stock and original. Original GM parts were used in the detail work under the hood and you will be proud to pop the hood at any show or event! The previous owner also believed the Transmission was original to the car. It is a Power Glide Automatic transmission that was also rebuilt and shifts really nicely. This Bel Air is also equipped with Power steering that handles beautifully. Manual brakes were completely gone through and stop this Bel Air very well. Anything that needed to be replaced was replaced at the time of restoration. All new fuel lines, brake lines, bushings, etc. Suspension was completely gone through and this car handles the road beautifully. Finishing off the nostalgic look is a great set of wide white wall tires on stock rims and hub caps. While Radial tires would ride a bit smoother, it is hard to argue with the period correct look of the Poly Wide white wall tires what have just over 3000 miles on them. Again, make sure you watch the video that follows to hear this Bel Air start up and running. I have driven this car and it is an absolute joy to drive and this is an awesome time of year to enjoy it! The undercarriage is completely rust free and highly detailed. It was treated to a nice coat of red oxide primer while the frame off restoration was done and it is extremely clean underneath. Frame rails were blasted and painted with Por 15. I do not see any evidence of rust repair or panel replacement so this dry, rust free California car may still have its original floor pans. The trunk is as nice as the rest of the car. Trunk pan is rock solid with no evidence of rust repair. Correct style rubber trunk mat, nice spare tire and jack complete the trunk area. Again, this Bel Air will be a car you will be proud to take to the shows and will most likely win plenty of trophies if that is what you enjoy. Take a look:
